How TeachFX makes it safe to reflect on teaching practice
Erin Lyon, Instructional Coach at Redding Middle School in the Appoquinimink School District, appreciates how TeachFX brings clarity when teachers have so much to focus on in the classroom. And creates a safe space for teachers to reflect on their teaching practices and instructional goals.
"So one of the benefits I think of TeachFX is just ...there's so much going on when you're teaching, you're making all these decisions, you're focusing on so many things, and trying to keep checking where students are and they're gauging their understanding, that sometimes it's hard to know what you even think you might want to focus on."
"I was not in the classroom when TeachFX was a thing. I think it's awesome. I have done video in the past with lessons and so I feel like TeachFX can give you that same idea without having that jarring of like, 'oh my gosh, I'm now on camera.'
"So seeing the reports, viewing the transcripts, the visuals and the graphs...you might go into that thinking, 'Oh, I'm going to focus on this or I want to improve on...Maybe it's about just my level of questioning and maybe that is something that I think I need to work on."
"But then I might really be surprised at or I know at least I was when I did something similar with video, I didn't realize how little wait time I was giving my students until I saw it on video."
"And so I think seeing in the TeachFX report would be so powerful because it might let you see, 'Oh gosh, I really thought I was giving students all this time to think and process and I wasn't. I was giving them like a second or 2 seconds."
"So it even might shift what your initial goals were. Maybe you thought I was going to focus on one thing when really the report kind of highlights some new insight for you and allows you to sort of reflect...Or even just point out what's something that you weren't aware of."
"Because like I said, there's so much nuance to teaching, there's so much going on. So I think the reports make it feel safe. It's easy to use, but it's also just such a great reflection tool."
"I've also appreciated a lot of the PD sessions we have."
"And I think just the clear picture of what's actually going on in the classroom, which you can't really get even when someone comes in your room, they're not tracking all that information for you all at once."
"And again, you're the only person who has to see it."
"So I think all of that kind of makes it a very safe feeling program and it just allows you as a teacher to grow and say, 'Hey, what do I think I want to work on with my students?'
"And I love the idea of celebrations - about even sharing with the students like, 'Hey, look at the word cloud, look at this academic language you guys were using today or the other day.' And sharing that with students or saying, 'Hey, look at all this, I heard some great conversations.' And really showing them on the report, kind of putting the proof out there."
"So I think there's a lot of great aspects to the app and the report, certainly, and a lot of the insights that I've just heard different teachers gaining from it."
"It's been really powerful for those who decided to give it a try."
